Assunpink Greenway Site Location

Location:Beginning at the Trenton/Hamilton Township border and continuing along the Assunpink Creek to the Delaware River, the Greenway will pass through several existing and proposed parks and (upon completion) provide a continuous pedestrian access-way with a minimum of roadway crossings.

Approximate Size: 99 acres

Facilities: Initial phases are completed on some of the parcels which include partial landscaping and pedestrian access to the creek’s edge.  Additional parcels are under construction and have been cleared of dilapidated buildings and debris.  This newly created open space will be available to the public once they are stabilized and the initial landscaping is completed. The balance of the park is in the design stage and will include numerous opportunities for active and passive recreation.

The Assunpink Creek Greenway is one of the most ambitious park projects the City of Trenton has taken on since the creation of Cadwalader Park. Comprised of both city owned and privately held land, negotiation for the acquisition of several of the remaining parcels is being conducted concurrently with environmental investigation, site design and park development. Funding for the development of these is being sought through various state, federal and local sources.

A portion of the park is adjacent to the Northeast Corridor Rail Line and a large percentage lies within the creek floodplain. Both of these conditions offer design challenges and will have to be considered in the final design.

Upon completion, the Greenway will encompass a total of 99 acres and will provide for desperately needed active and passive recreation opportunities as well as realize a vision proposed in 1907 by the Olmsted firm, designers of Cadwalader Park.

The Assunpink Greenway currently has six active projects:
