Location: Bounded by Broad and Warren Street. Facilities: Dedicated in 1893, the Battle Monument commemorates the American victory at the first Battle of Trenton which occurred on December 26, 1776. It is located in an area of the city known as “Five Points.” It was here, at the intersection of North Broad Street (formerly Queen St.), Warren Street (formerly King St.) and Brunswick (formerly Maidenhead Road), Pennington (formerly Hopewell Road) and Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd. (formerly Beakes Lane/Princeton Avenue), that the American artillery was placed. From this vantage point, the artillery dominated the streets of Trenton, preventing the Hessian troops from organizing an effective counter attack. This victory heartened the rebellious colonists and shocked the British establishment. The park underwent a $1.2 m restoration funded by a Green Acres grant and was completed in 2002. It provides an abundance of seating and passive recreation lawn and often serves as a site for political rallies and social events.(click here for more historical information on the park) NOTE: Clicking on the link above takes you to the State of NJ Web Page which gives more historical information about the Battle Monument.
