Edgewood Ave. Park which lies adjacent to the Delaware and Raritan Canal State Park and directly across Edgewood Ave. from the Cadwalader Elementary School had been long neglected. The property surrounding the school serves as staff parking and has no provision (outside of the asphalt surface) for recreational opportunities. Access to the adjacent State Park was limited to badly eroded 'desire' pathways which were both dangerous and contributing to canal bank destabilization. City owned property adjacent to the park (that now houses the batting cage and picnic area) was under-utilized, overgrown and covered with debris.

The renovation project (c. 2004) addressed all of these issues and the park has subsequently become heavily used as both a recreation venue as well as an outdoor classroom for the school. The batting cage provides an 'off -season' practice space for the West End Little League as well as a sheltered enclosure for community gatherings. A local artist was employed to paint the outside of the building with sports theme murals and was assisted by children from the school.

Access to the State Park canal towpath has provided the students with a traffic-free passageway to Cadwalader Park, the City of Trenton's largest park and home to the city museum.
